Why council water meters need regular verification

Flow meters are precision instruments, but they don't stay precise forever. Over time, accuracy degrades, electrodes foul, mechanical components wear, and transmitter calibration drifts. For councils, the consequences of out-of-spec meters are practical and financial: billing inaccuracy, network data errors, regulatory compliance issues, and audit risk. Regular verification keeps your meters performing within tolerance and gives you defensible, auditable records.

Physical verification vs electronic verification

Physical verification uses an IANZ-calibrated portable ultrasonic meter, the Flexim Fluxus F601, clamped onto the pipe alongside the installed meter. The two readings are compared under live flow conditions, and a pass or fail result is recorded to ±5% tolerance. Suitable for all meter types.

Electronic verification is available for electromagnetic (mag) flow meters and uses brand-specific test equipment to check the health of the installed meter electronically, without requiring flow conditions. Accepted by most NZ local and district councils. Particularly useful for meters where access to live flow is difficult, mid-cycle health checks, or large network programmes.

Managing a network verification programme

  • Inventory your meters, meter type, size, installation date, and last verification date
  • Set a verification schedule, map out when each meter is due based on meter type
  • Prioritise critical meters, bulk supply, pump station, and DMA boundary meters first
  • Consider electronic verification for mag meters to reduce programme cost
  • Keep records, certificates should show meter ID, location, date, method, result, and equipment used

Does NZ Flow Group verify meters from all manufacturers?

Yes, Siemens, Endress+Hauser, Krohne, ABB, and others. Electronic verification requires brand-specific test equipment, contact us to confirm availability for your specific meter models.

Can you verify meters without interrupting water supply?

In most cases yes. Physical verification is carried out with the meter in service. Electronic verification for mag meters also does not require flow interruption.

How long does a council water meter verification take?

A typical physical verification takes 1–2 hours per meter. Electronic verifications are generally faster. For network programmes involving multiple meters, we schedule visits to minimise travel time and disruption.

What happens if a meter fails verification?

NZ Flow Group will diagnose the cause and advise on remediation options, repair, recalibration, or replacement. Meter replacement and re-verification can be carried out as part of the same engagement.
